A cam belt (timing belt) is required to control the timing of an engine’s valves. To be specific, it connects the crank shaft to the cam shaft, which controls the opening and closing of the engine’s valves. The cam belt is guided by a set of pulleys, designed differently by each manufacturer. They are referred to as idler and tensioner pulleys.
Every timing belt has its own life and every manufacturer gives recommended times to replace the belt. Failure to follow these guidelines can result in major damage and leave a big hole in your pocket. In some cases, your pulley may be the cause of damage by jamming and causing the belt to snap.
